I know very little about the Ruhr Region, in fact it is hard for me to pronounce its name – and I’ve never shot High Definition before. Yet I believe I have made a film true to my feelings of this place. Ruhr takes a look at some of the labor performed here and the processes controlled by that labor. It is about things that reoccur and the subtle changes that happen. It asks you to look and to listen.

„Ruhr“ ist der erste Film, den James Benning außerhalb Amerikas gedreht hat. Es ist der Blick eines amerikanischen Künstlers auf das Ruhrgebiet. Von Duisburg aus erkundet er in mehreren Reisen die einstige Arbeiterregion. Im Zentrum steht dabei stets sein Begriff von Kultur und Arbeit - Kultur, die aus Arbeit hervorgeht, Arbeit, die Kultur hervorbringt und Kunst, die als Kunstwerk den Kulturbegriff gesellschaftlich vervollständigt. Dafür hat er in Duisburger Stahlwerken gedreht, wie auch die „Bramme für das Ruhrgebiet “ auf der Essener Schurrenbachhalde von Richard Serra portraitiert, er hat das Freitagsgebet in der Duisburger Moschee in Marxloh besucht, aber auch das Leben in einer kleinen Seitenstraße in Essen beobachtet.

Der Film folgt dabei in allen Szenen einem besonderen Muster, einer Matrix an Prozessen, die in ihren spezifischen Rhythmen die Zeit in Abschnitte einteilen und damit Geschichte, Wandel und Veränderung stets mit der narrativen Ebene verflechten.

So ist „Ruhr“ nicht nur das Portrait einer Region im Strukturwandel und damit eines Paradigmenwechsels der Kulturgeschichte der Arbeit, sondern gleichzeitig eine Hommage an die Region und ihre Menschen, an diejenigen, die arbeitend die Kultur der Region gestalten.

„Ruhr“ is James Benning's first film shot outside the US and presents the American artist's perspective on the Ruhr district in Germany, a region formed by coal mining, industrialization and its working class inhabitants. Using Duisburg as his starting point, Benning sets out on small trips to explore the area and the relationship of labor, culture and art – culture emanating from labor, labor generating culture, and art completing the societal definition of culture.

Filming took place at a steel plant in Duisburg as well as at the „Bramme für das Ruhrgebiet“, a monolithic sculpture by Richard Serra positioned on a former mining dump in Essen. Benning also visited the Friday prayer at the Duisburg mosque in Marxloh and took a look at everyday life in a small back road in Essen.

Every scene adheres to a rigid framework, a matrix of processes whose specific rhythms compartmentalize time and thus help interweaving history and change with the narrative structure of the film.

„Ruhr“ is more than a portrait of a region subject to structural change and an example of the paradigm shift in the cultural history of labor. It is also a hommage to the Ruhr district and its people, to those who work to form their region's culture.
